Etoile (Helton) Roberts

February 22, 1919 ~ June 4, 2020 (age 101)

Obituary

Etoile Helton Roberts, 101, left this life to be with Jesus her Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Greene Rural Nursing Center where she had been a resident the past few years. Etoile was born February 21, 1919 to Samuel Elijah and Clarinda Loftin Helton. She was the youngest of six siblings. She was a part of the WPA program during the great depression and learned to cook and sew. Etoile was a hardworking woman and spent her life cooking for others, multiple nursing homes and hospitals in Greene County and Escatapwa. She worked well into her 90’s and if you were to ask her what the secret to life is she would simply say “work hard”.
Just like the meaning of her name “Etoile”, she was a bright shining star in a sometimes dark world. She had a strong personality, a quick wit, and a sassy demeanor combined with a contagious laugh that will never be forgotten. Later in life Etoiles memory remained clear and intact. She could easily recall a story from years past to share with others, and found great enjoyment in that. The past few years of her life were spent making new memories with her niece Fonda Williams, nephew Darrell Roberts and her two granddaughters Tina and Lesley from Texas that loved to take her out shopping  and spoil her. Which in return gave Etoile new stories to tell. She enjoyed having visitors, loved to play Bingo with the girls, and going to the beauty shop. Etoile will be greatly missed but we take comfort that we will keep her memory alive with her stories.
Etoile married the love of her life Henry L Roberts Jr in 1943. Etoile and Henry spent many years in Escatapwa, surrounded by family helping to help raise nieces and nephews which she took great pride in. Etoile and Henry moved back to Greene County in 1972 and making a home in Leaf, Mississippi. Following the passing of her husband in 1982, she moved back to Leakesville where her life journey first began.
Etoile is preceded in death by her parents Samuel Elijah Helton and Claranda Loftin Helton. She is also preceded in death by her husband Henry L Roberts, Jr.; her brothers, Van Helton, Chester Helton, Bill Helton; sisters, Eloise Helton Hinton, Annie Bell Helton Robertson, and Virdie Maude Helton DeVore. Also preceded in death by special nephews, Sam Pope and Cecil Robertson; special nieces, Lynda Helton Sherman and Monta Ann Helton Barlow; and great- grandson Evan Gill Daniels.
She is survived by her son, Leslie Neil Gill (Sue) of Tenaha, TX; granddaughters, Tina Daniels (Kent) of Spring, TX , Lesley Vasquez (Tim) Lake Dallas, TX; nephew, Darrell Roberts (Ramona) Fairhope, AL; nieces, Fonda Williams (Baker) of Lucedale, MS and Theressa Miles (Johnny) Wiggins, MS; great- grandchildren Dustin Norris (Sarah) of Nacogdoches,TX, Coltin Wray of Lake Dallas,TX, Logan and Lauren Daniels of Spring, TX; and great-great granddaughter, Kinsley Grace Norris.
