Roy Gene Hicks, Sr.January 21, 1925 ~ December 16, 2017 (age 92)
Roy Gene Hicks, Sr., 92, passed away on December 16, 2017 at his home in Leakesville. Mr. Hicks was a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He was a mechanical engineering graduate of Mississippi State University. He worked in the petroleum industry for much of his life, retiring from Shell Oil Company. He worked in the aerospace industry during the Apollo Program, where he was responsible for the hydraulics system on the Saturn V rocket booster stage (1st stage). His was the final test at the Mississippi Test Facility before transfer to Cape Kennedy (Canaveral) and lift-off to the moon. Mr. Roy was a farmer/rancher in Greene County for 50 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He and his wife, Mrs. Pal, were dearly loved by family and friends, and they loved and respected him very much. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Leakesville, where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Garnet Palmetto Hillman Hicks; parents, Millard Fillmore and Jewel Hicks; siblings, Mildred Hicks Dietz, James Melvin Hicks, and Lyndel Hicks McKay. He is survived by his children, Roy Gene Hicks, Jr. (Katherine), Samuel Thomason Hicks (Ruth), Pamela Ann Hicks Posey (Ronnie), and Robert Paul Hicks; sister, Julia Ann Hicks; grandchildren, Holly Hicks McDavid, Jessica Hicks White, Hannah Hicks Bartha, Matthew Cody Hicks, Alexandra Ann Hicks; great-grandchildren, Audrey Pierce, Michaela Pierce, Caleb White, Jackson McDavid, Parker McDavid, Hunter Bartha, and Amelia Bartha; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
The Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 in the Freeman Funeral Home Chapel with a visitation prior to the service beginning at 12 pm.
