Jimmie Gaven McLain, Sr.June 8, 1937 ~ October 18, 2017 (age 80)
Mr. Jimmie Gaven McLain, Sr., 80, a native and resident of McLain, MS and former resident of Mobile, AL passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Greene County Hospital. Mr. McLain honorably served in the United States Airforce during the Korean War and later was active in many community activities throughout his life including the position of Mayor of McLain. He was a hard worker and owned McLain Shell Station and later D.L. Tire and Repair for many years with his wife. He was a great provider for his family and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He raised not only his children and stepchildren, but many others he considered to be his own. He was a member of Sweetwater Missionary Baptist Church and was known as the “candyman” to all the children. He also was very active in the Abba Temple Shriners. Mr. McLain was preceded in death by his parents, Dossie and Jewel McLain. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 24 years, Joe Ann McLain; son, Scott L. “Shadow” McLain, daughter, Laurel “Tag” McLain, daughter, Stella H. Roberts, daughter, Beth Hillman, son, Sam Hillman and son, Eddie Hillman; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann Penton and Shirley Green; a very special friend, Ken Cumbie; and other relatives and friends. The wake will be from 6-9pm Friday, October 20, 2017 at Sweetwater Missionary Baptist Church. The funeral service will be 11am Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Sweetwater Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Charlie McNeil and Bro. Leland James officiating. Burial will follow in McLain Cemetery.
